Biography.
My name is Darren Simmons and I have dedicated my time to fundraising for Meningitis Now as I am a survivor of bacterial meningitis. I contracted this when I was 10. I was paralysed for around 11 weeks amongst other symptoms and this has left me with long term disabilities. These include serious balance problems, debilitating migraines, hearing loss and weakness in my left hand side. In my teens I was a very good swimmer and raced a lot. Then I started playing water polo and ended up with a trial for the junior England squad...sadly I didn’t carry on with this as I discovered girls and sport disappeared out of my life. In my late twenties I was married for 11 years, had four children and then was separated. Due to this separation I needed something to focus on, and as I had spare time I bought a rowing machine. This kick started my enthusiasm for rowing, so when I met my now 2nd wife, Miriam, we joined a local rowing club. From here on I embraced rowing as it suited me as it is a no impact sport and it really built up the muscles in my back and legs. In 2012 I rowed 2012 miles on the water and rowing machines for Meningitis Now and raised over £4000. This has inspired me to carry on creating and completing challenges to help raise money and awareness of Meningitis. |
Meningitis News.
Dear Supporter, Today is an historic day. This morning, the Department of Health announced that the Meningococcal B (Meningitis B) vaccine WILL be introduced into the childhood immunisation programme. We’ve campaigned tirelessly for this vaccine and it’s a victory for YOU and the thousands of families affected by meningitis every day. We know it comes too late for many people but we hope you take some comfort in the fact that future generations will now be protected. We want to take this opportunity to say a personal thank you to every single one of you for your help and support in achieving this significant result. The Government will now begin price negotiations with the vaccine company Novartis, with a view to giving the vaccine free to all infants on the NHS. You can read the full details on our website. This is a fantastic step forward but it will take some time to implement. We still have so much more that we have to do in our ongoing fight against meningitis. We must continue to raise awareness, fund research into new and improved vaccines, provide support for everyone affected and, of course, we have to raise the vital funds we need to do our work.
